How to choose a game to play with friends
Last updated: 2026-10-06
Start with constraints that can make a game impossible for the group, then move to preferences. This avoids spending time comparing games that someone cannot join or run.
1. Lock the player count first
Check how many people are actually playing today. A game that supports four players is not automatically a good fit for a group of six, and some multiplayer games are not designed for cooperative play.
2. Set the practical limits
Choose the budget, expected session length, language requirements and PC constraints before adding genre preferences. These filters remove candidates that would fail for someone in the group.
3. Add the kind of experience you want
Use tags such as co-op, horror, survival, FPS or party after the hard constraints are set. If no game matches every preference, compare the closest candidates rather than dropping the requirements that matter.
4. Verify the final choice on Steam
Catalog data is refreshed periodically, but prices, supported features and system requirements can change. Open the Steam page for the final candidate before purchasing or installing.
